The Gambia Standards Bureau was established by the Government of the Gambia through an Act of Parliament in 2010 called The Gambia Standards Bureau Act. The Bureau itself began operations in October 2011.

The Bureau is overseen by a Board of Directors which is currently chaired by an independent private individual. Its membership is specified in the Act and is composed of representatives of Government, Consumers, Private Sector and Academia. The Board determines the overall policy and strategy of the Bureau including its finances.

The Bureau is headed by a Director General who is also responsible for its day-to-day operations. The DG is an ex-officio member of the Board.

To standardize goods, services and systems in accordance with internationally-recognized procedures to enhance industrial growth and efficiency, facilitate trade, promote health, safety and environmental protection.

Guiding Principles and Values

In the delivery of its mandate and fulfilment of its strategic vision, The Gambia Standards Bureau adheres to the following principles and values:

  • Principle 1: Standards development will be driven by the needs of stakeholders and Gambian Standards (TGSB) will only be produced where appropriate.
  • Principle 2: Standards development will follow internationally-recognized procedures for the preparation, adoption and application of standards.
  • Principle 3: TGSB shall be informed by internationally-recognized good practices to resolve the conflicts of interest foreseeable in its programmes and activities.
  • Principle 4: For TGSB to be successful and continue to be relevant as facilitator to industry and trade, it should not mix any regulatory functions in its portfolio.
  • Principle 5: TGSB follows core values of transparency, integrity, inclusiveness and consensus- building.

The main objectives and functions of the Bureau, as specified in the Act, are as follows:

  • Establish and promulgate standards for imported and locally produced goods;
  • Define, Prepare, Publish, Modify or Amend Standard Specifications;
  • Promote Standardization, Conformity Assessment and Metrology in Industry and Commerce;
  • Promote industrial efficiency and development;
  • Promote standards in public and industrial welfare, health and safety;
  • Promote information dissemination on standards;
  • Inspect on request by Government or private bodies, consignments of goods supplied, received or prepared for export and to deliver certificates of their conformity or otherwise to requirements of standards;
  • Specify a Standard Mark called “The Gambia Standards Bureau Certification Mark”;
  • Keep and maintain national primary standards of measurements in line with international standards and reference standards for calibration of measures and measuring instruments;

The Bureau is also empowered as follows, as defined in its Act:

  • Grant, Renew, Suspend, or Cancel a Licence for the use of its Standard Mark;
  • Levy fees for the Granting or Renewal of any Licence;
  • Inspect and sample any material or substance to confirm whether any goods or process in relation to which the Standard Mark has been used conforms to the national standard or whether the Standard Mark has been improperly used in relation to that article or process;
  • Establish branches, offices or agencies in or outside Gambia;
  • Become a member of, or affiliate to international or regional bodies concerned with standardization;
  • Undertake any other activity likely to assist in the performance of its functions under this Act.
