WHO WE ARE

The Gambia Standards Bureau was established by the Government of the Gambia through an Act of Parliament in 2010 called The Gambia Standards Bureau Act. The Bureau itself began operations in October 2011.The Bureau is overseen by a Board of Directors which is currently chaired by an independent private individual. Its membership is specified in the Act and is composed of representatives of Government, Consumers, Private Sector and Academia. The Board determines the overall policy and strategy of the Bureau including its finances.

The Bureau is headed by a Director General who is also responsible for its day-to-day operations. The DG is an ex-officio member of the Board.

The Bureau is also empowered as follows, as defined in its Act:

  • Grant, Renew, Suspend, or Cancel a License for the use of its Standard Mark;
  • Levy fees for the Granting or Renewal of any License;
  • Inspect and sample any material or substance to confirm whether any goods or process in relation to which the Standard Mark has been used conforms to the national standard or whether the Standard Mark has been improperly used in relation to that article or process;
  • Establish branches, offices or agencies in or outside Gambia;
  • Become a member of, or affiliate to international or regional bodies concerned with standardization;
  • Undertake any other activity likely to assist in the performance of its functions under this Act.
